Destin Jacobus is the founder and lead creative director over Impakt Recordings, a DJ/producer, mixed media and graf artist, designer and youth minister. With a love for all things creative, he’s always active in the music and art scenes weaving many creative forms together through a variety of solo projects and collective endeavors.
Ever since his early exposure to the eclectic sounds of electronic dance music in the early 90’s, Destin has always had an interest in sharing electronic music with others. Handing out cassette tape compilations and experimenting with music production as early as middle school, it wasn’t any surprise when a few years later he began mixing as a DJ.
Taking full advantage of the music resources that began to develop online in the 90’s and reading imported copies of some of Europe’s best electronic music publications, Destin became increasingly interested in the growing diversity of genres and sub styles within the electronic music umbrella. Coming from a background of 80’s electro, indie rock, reggae, dub, hip hop and drum & bass the common thread of his mixing and production has always been the love for a wide variety of sounds and diversity in artistic expression.
Later during his years at Toccoa Falls College, Destin founded and hosted Underground Sound Radio, weekly on WTXR 89.7 FM – the first ever electronic music radio show on the station. The weekly radio show featured several hours of exclusive live mixes, unreleased tracks promo tracks from labels all over the world , and regular guest interviews. In addition to holding down the weekly residency and hosting USR, in 2004 he also formed and began directing The House Warming Collective, a party production crew which threw intimate underground house parties on regular rotation.
After finishing college and moving back into Atlanta during 2006, Destin joined Brett Abramson (DJ Numinous) owner of Satellite Records Atlanta to begin the inevitable transition and move from the storefront location in Little Five Points, into Propel Records, an online record shop.
After years off from his own production, he began working with his longtime friend and best mate Ryan Gibson. Exploring the glitch sound through a variety of various styles and pushing to take things to the next level, a new series of productions began in 2008. Destin is pioneering in a direction past the process of simply creating live dj mix sets with turntables and has gone full force into the realm of live performance and live remixing and freeform improvisational live production at events. The sound is a blend of minimal and tech house, electro house, ghetto tech, hip hop, and drum & bass sounds.
When it comes to heading up Impakt Recordings, he brings his knowledge from years of scene experience as well as background in creative design and grassroots marketing to offer a fresh approach to running a label. Whereas most labels seem to release only a narrow sound and focus only on releasing music, Impakt is directed towards fresh ideas and collaborations between musical artists and producers, dj’s, photographers, graphic designers and visual artists. Just as anyone who knows him would say, Destin is passionate about community, and spreading love and truth through the arts. This spills over into Impakt through the way parties are put together, artists collaborate, and people are exposed to a new and interesting way to experience the arts.
In addition, Destin is also currently involved with the Ableton Live user group of Atlanta (meeting at the SAE institute), plays at a variety of shows, events, and parties all over the Southeast.
